Adapting with Agility: FIA’s Swift Action in Addressing Safety Concerns at the Australian GP

The FIA has made a “significant” change to the Albert Park Circuit after feedback from the F1 drivers.

The decision to remove the fourth straight mode zone in Melbourne was made prioritizing safety based on feedback and concerns from drivers about low downforce affecting control during cornering. This specific zone posed a risk due to its curved nature between corners eight and nine in the circuit. The change was communicated by FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis during a media briefing in Melbourne. The adjustment aimed to ensure a safe racing environment and address the downforce reduction experienced during straight mode activation by some teams. The decision to remove the zone was made unanimously for all cars to maintain fairness and safety standards for the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Despite potential setup adjustments needed, the action was taken in the interest of safety following constructive discussions with drivers and analysis of downforce implications in the racing conditions.
